Your adventure begins with a scenic morning flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, offering spectacular aerial views of the eastern Himalayas, lush hills, and winding rivers. Upon arrival, you'll meet your trekking crew before driving through Khandbari and picturesque villages to Num, the gateway to the Makalu region. The drive follows winding mountain roads with beautiful views of terraced fields and the Arun Valley.
After breakfast, descend steeply through terraced farmland to the Arun River. Cross a long suspension bridge before beginning a steady uphill climb through forests and small settlements to Seduwa. Along the way, you'll pass through the entrance checkpoint of Makalu Barun National Park, where your permits are registered.
Today's trail winds through beautiful forests, cardamom farms, and traditional Rai villages before reaching Tashigaon, the last permanent settlement before entering the high alpine region. The village offers excellent views of the surrounding hills and provides a peaceful introduction to the remote Himalayan lifestyle.
This is one of the most demanding days of the trek as you gain significant altitude. The trail climbs steadily through dense rhododendron and oak forests before emerging into alpine landscapes. As you ascend, enjoy increasingly spectacular mountain views and experience the dramatic transition from subtropical vegetation to high Himalayan terrain.
Today is one of the most scenic sections of the trek as you cross the famous Shipton La Pass (4,216 m) and several smaller mountain passes. The route rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, and countless snow-capped peaks before descending through alpine meadows and forests to Dobate.
The trail follows the beautiful Barun River through dense forests filled with moss-covered trees, waterfalls, and rocky cliffs. As the valley gradually widens, you'll enter peaceful yak grazing areas before reaching Yangri Kharka, surrounded by impressive Himalayan scenery.
Leaving the forest behind, today's route follows the glacial valley through alpine meadows and rugged mountain landscapes. Magnificent views of Mount Makalu become increasingly dramatic as you approach Langmale Kharka, a beautiful high-altitude pasture surrounded by towering peaks.
Today is the highlight of the journey. Following rocky moraines and glacial terrain, you'll arrive at the spectacular Makalu Base Camp. The breathtaking panorama includes Mount Makalu, Baruntse, Chamlang, Peak 6, Peak 7, and the impressive Barun Glacier. Spend time exploring the surroundings and enjoying one of Nepal's most remarkable mountain viewpoints.
Wake early to witness a magnificent Himalayan sunrise over Mount Makalu. After exploring the base camp and surrounding viewpoints, begin your descent through Langmale Kharka and continue to Yangri Kharka for the overnight stay.
Retrace your steps through the scenic Barun Valley, following the river and lush forests back to Dobate. The return journey offers a new perspective on the dramatic landscapes and provides excellent opportunities for photography.
Climb back across the alpine ridges and high mountain passes before returning to Khongma Danda. The panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges make the challenging ascent well worthwhile.
Descend through beautiful rhododendron forests, passing waterfalls and traditional mountain landscapes before arriving back at Tashigaon. The lower altitude offers warmer temperatures and a comfortable evening.
Continue descending through forests, farmland, and charming villages before crossing the Arun River and climbing back to Num. Celebrate the successful completion of your trek while enjoying your final evening in the mountains.
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive back through the beautiful Arun Valley to Tumlingtar. Spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring the local town before your flight to Kathmandu the following day.
Take a scenic morning flight back to Kathmandu, where our representative will transfer you to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for shopping, sightseeing, or relaxing after your unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal's most spectacular and least-traveled trekking adventures. Nestled in the pristine wilderness of eastern Nepal, this incredible journey takes you through ancient forests, traditional mountain villages, high alpine meadows, and glacial valleys before reaching the magnificent Makalu Base Camp (4,870 m) at the foot of Mount Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth-highest mountain on Earth.
Unlike the busy Everest and Annapurna trails, the Makalu region offers true solitude and an authentic Himalayan experience. The route passes through the breathtaking Makalu Barun National Park, one of Nepal's richest protected areas, home to rare wildlife including the red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, and over 440 species of birds.
From lush subtropical forests to rugged alpine landscapes, every day presents dramatic scenery and unforgettable mountain views. Along the way, you'll experience the warm hospitality of Rai and Sherpa communities while enjoying panoramic views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, Kangchungtse, and even distant Everest and Lhotse.
If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure that combines wilderness, culture, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery, the Makalu Base Camp Trek is an exceptional choice.
Trip Highlights
While Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit attract thousands of trekkers every year, the Makalu region remains one of Nepal's best-kept secrets. This trek is perfect for adventurers seeking untouched nature, peaceful trails, and genuine cultural encounters.
The journey combines physical challenge with extraordinary rewards. As you ascend through changing landscapes, you'll witness everything from terraced farmland and rhododendron forests to glacial rivers and dramatic Himalayan peaks.
Because the trail is less commercialized, you'll enjoy a more authentic trekking experience with fewer crowds and closer connections to local communities.
The best seasons for the Makalu Base Camp Trek are:
Spring (March–May)
Spring offers pleasant temperatures, blooming rhododendron forests, and clear mountain views. The forests burst into color, making this one of the most beautiful times to visit.

Winter is possible for experienced trekkers but brings snow and colder temperatures, while the monsoon season is generally not recommended due to heavy rainfall and slippery trails.
